What’s the best way to soundproof an apartment floor to mitigate electronic drum noise?

Harris C asked:

I have an electronic drum kit, which is pretty quiet, but it bugs the neighbors -- especially the kick and hi-hat pedals. Any recommendations for building a mat or something to keep the noise that is audible downstairs to a minimum? Thanks!

  1. Cork is popular, but a lot of it is expensive.
You can also get stuff like this:

  2. put 2 inches of studio foam around the exits and walls

  3. Is it an option to use headphones? I’m not sure how your system is setup but if you can get the right sound effect, that might be an option.

  4. Well there is a very good way but it isn’t cheap…
I think this runs a little over $200, obviously it should do much more than a common throw rug at that price. Everyone else is talking headphones and sound proofing walls but it sounds like it is the vibration from the pedals transferring through the floor that is the issue. None of these solutions will help with floor vibration from the pedals, only an anti-vibration mat like the TDM-20 will help with that.
